Mission Statement
The Mission of the University of California, San Diego Continuing Medical Education (UCSD CME) is to provide needs-based education for physicians and health care providers to improve knowledge, competence, and performance and enable the optimum provision of health care.

Core competencies defined by Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for radiology training include patient care, medical knowledge, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, practice-based learning and improvement, and systems-based practice. (Collins) This program is designed to promote ongoing learning and development of these core competencies.
The educational need for this course was ascertained from several sources. Feedback on questionnaires from prior UCSD Breast Imaging courses has indicated a need for radiology courses that offer a focused curriculum emphasizing common pathologies, differential diagnosis, interventional procedures, and emerging technologies.
The mammography accreditation requirements set forth by the American College of Radiology (2009) requires that interpreting physicians meet the minimum MQSA qualifications including 15 category 1 CME credits in a 36-month period.
This course emphasizes the lecture format to convey maximal information to the participants. The lecture format also includes a case presentation and discussion. The course is supplemented by question-and-answer sessions because different learning methods tend to suit different doctors and different identified learning needs. (Grant)
Expert faculty opinion has also identified a need for training in detailed breast histology and pathology correlation, MR indications and protocol design, and multidisciplinary breast care, based on new findings published in the literature, our own research, and our extensive experience teaching at various training levels locally, nationally, and internationally.
The course is designed for practicing radiologists who wish to comprehensively review and update their knowledge of breast imaging and interventions. It is also appropriate for radiology residents, fellows, technologists, and nurses involved in breast imaging, as well as breast surgeons, oncologists, and advanced practitioners in the field of breast health care.
Attendees should, at the completion of this course, be able to:
Discuss the controversies and future opportunities in breast cancer screening.
Review the current and future multimodality BI-RADS lexicon and reporting schema.
Discuss how to optimize your breast imaging practice efficiency.
Describe the advances in preoperative location techniques, stereotactic, and US-guided breast biopsy.
Discuss current trends in the management of breast cancer.
Explain new technologies in breast imaging, including contrast-enhanced mammography, Artificial Intelligence, tomosynthesis, and cryoablation.
The Breast Imaging and Interventions Update will provide a practical overview of breast imaging and interventions by leaders in the field. Subjects being covered include: diagnosis of breast pathology using mammography, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, and contrast-enhanced mammography; interventional procedures including core biopsies of breast finding with multiple imaging modalities, current trends in patient management and optimizing your breast imaging program. Multiple case review sessions will emphasize the didactic content presented throughout the program.
Tuition includes all course materials, including a comprehensive course digital syllabus, daily continental breakfasts and coffee breaks. Early registration is strongly suggested. There will be a $50 surcharge for anyone registering after October 16, 2026. Minimum and maximum attendance levels have been established for this meeting. If your registration cannot be accepted, you will be issued a full tuition refund. Cancellations must be received in writing. A $100 processing fee will be applied to all cancellations. Refunds requested in writing prior to October 16, 2026. Will be issued for the amount of tuition paid less the $100 processing fee. No refunds will be made on or after that date.
California Assembly Bill 1195 requires continuing medical education activities with patient care components to include curriculum in the subjects of cultural and linguistic competency. It is the intent of the bill, which went into effect on July 1, 2006, to encourage physicians and surgeons, CME providers in the state of California, and the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to meet the cultural and linguistic concerns of a diverse patient population through appropriate professional development.
